Mr Mole

How scary is this picture. A Giant Mole model is being displayed at Llandudno's Oriel Mostyn gallery. It looks bloody terrifying, probably leave a lot of kids disturbed if they see this.
Salute to Gary McKinnock
Posted by liam on April 27, 2006 5:00 PM
Ok everybody we have this week's Geek Chic Hero of the Week.
To the United States, he is a seriously dangerous man who put the nation's security at risk by committing "the biggest military computer hack of all time". But British Gary McKinnon broke into the systems at NASA, the Pentagon, Johnson Space Centre as well as systems used by the U.S. army, navy and air force for a very good reason. He wanted to look for evidence of UFOs and Aliens. Even better than that he claims he found evidence that they do.
It's not all fun and game for the lad, he is being charged with terrorism and may be sent to Guantanimo Bay according to his defence lawyers. Now although he is being charged as a terrorist this is more a case of embarassing the US government and defences forces, Kinnock explained that
"many U.S. top-security systems were using an insecure Microsoft Windows programme and had no password protection at all." He argues he is being made a scapegoat by U.S. authorities to deter other would-be hackers rather than address their own security flaws. His supporters include some MPs who back his fight to change the UK-U.S. extradition treaty
Personally i hope he manages to sell his story for really expensive movie rights and gets a nice well paid job as an IT security after all this.
Steet 'crime' Magic

This sounds like a cool trick would have loved to have seen it. Illusionist David Coperfield, was held at gunpoint but pulled a trick on his would be robbers and convinced them his pockets and sleeves were empty, dispite containing his passport, mobile phone and wallet. Got to hand it to him that was pretty cool.
BBC online
Posted by liam on April 25, 2006 4:00 PM
The BBC is planning to give its website an overhaul, to make it more personalised, allow more user generated content and more audio visual content. From tomorrow internet users will for the first time be able to search for details of the corporation's entire programme catalogue as far back as 1937, for the life of me i can't really think of anything from that long ago i'd be interested in. Though if they have some of the good documentaries or old football match footage it may be worth a gander.
As it stands I think the BBC's website is pretty good already, can't be sure this will be an improvement of services, though it's probably due for a good updating. Part of the announcement states "The BBC should no longer think of itself as a broadcaster of TV and radio and some new media on the side. We should aim to deliver public service content to our audiences in whatever media and on whatever device makes sense for them, whether they are at home or on the move."

Command and Conquer: Tiberian Wars
Posted by liam on April 25, 2006 3:01 PM
Just read this press release from EA Games they're making a new Command and Conquer game. For those who don't know Command and Conquer is a Real Time Strategy (or one of those games where you have a little army of soldiers and tanks), no infact its THE Game where you have a little army of soldiers and tanks. Will be looking forward to this when it arrives, shame its not due till 2007
Why computer games are good... somtimes at least
Posted by liam on April 25, 2006 3:00 PM
The BBC has had some rather interesting stories about computer games recently and how they are evolving beyong mere entertainment. Most recently they've ran a story about a nintendo game called Brain Training , this is a hugely popular game in Japan especially with older generations. The game challenges you to some basic maths, reading and other puzzles then tells you your IQ age, the more you play on the game the better your brain becomes. There is an early review of the Japanese version here .
Other recent stories include a feature about games which involve dance mats being used to combat obesity, games being used to treat medical eye conditions and how more complex games can help prepare young people for the complexities of life
All the stories are worth a read, and they will help you feel less guilty when you spend all night playing Tomb Raider
Where's he keeping it?

Here's a really weird story, a 22 year old man in USA lives on a 6,500 calorie diet (almost three times the recommended amount) but only weighs 7 stone. In fact the guy has to wear thick clothing in summer to prevent getting ill through heat loss. As a self confessed skinny bugger i can sympathise with this guys dream of bulking out. Although he lives mainly on thick protein shakes, he could eat over 8 McDonald Big Macs plus regular meals.
Birthday Portrait
Posted by liam on April 21, 2006 3:00 PM
This story had me smiling. A grafiti artist on Duke Street, Liverpool, has created an unofficial portrait of the Queen to mark her 80th birthday. The article claims most people on Duke Street have been pretty positive about the painting, though obviously the council are going to remove it as soon as they can.
Lost Gospel of Judas
Posted by liam on April 20, 2006 3:30 PM
Here's a really strange story. Normally i would completely dimiss this as a poppycock internet rumour and even now I think the story should be taken with a huge pinch of salt. The National Geographic (what i've always thought of as a pretty trustworthy source) is reporting about the discovery of the lost gospel of Judas Iscariot and here is another related article again
Nuclear Garden
Posted by liam on April 20, 2006 3:30 PM
Here's a good story, the area of Chenobyl home to the world's worst nuclear accident and still one of the most contaminated areas, has become a natural sanctuary for wildlife. Because the area was deserted, the lack of any humans has meant the local wildlife has flourished. Mary Mycio, author of Wormwood Forest, a natural history of the Chernobyl zone, points out that the benefits to wildlife of removing people from the zone, have far outweighed any harm from the radiation of the area.
Digital Scrolls
Posted by liam on April 20, 2006 1:48 PM
The BBC has an interesting video about electronic scrolls and digital books. Perhaps the next big thing, similar to an ipod but for books, instead of downloading music you can download books, magazines, newspapers and carry them around with you. Sounds like a good idea, worth keeping an eye out for.

Here's a good little story for you. A golf club in Wales has made a dog an honourary member, due to the number of stray balls it has returned. Dare i do so low and say "this club is going to the dogs"?
How to get onto the property ladder

Really funny site One Red Paperclip. Apparently a Canadian man is trying to trade items for a house. He started with a red paper clip and keeps trading for better items, eventually hoping to be able to trade up to a house. Along the way he has swapped the red paperclip for a pen, which he swapped for and other items include; a generator and a snow mobile. He is now up to the level of being able to trade a a years worth of rent free living in a house. His ultimate plan is to trade up to a new house that will be permanently his.
Funny Stories

This is my first post here and I'm still learning how this all works. Rather than try and write soemthing witty, or intelligent, or half way interesting i've decided to just start slowly and just include a bunch links to some funny stories I've spotted recently. Most are from IcLiverpool but seeings as how they're hosting this blog i suppose i can allow them a little free publicity. Mind you it will only be my mum and my mate Dave who will ever read this blog so its not like they're getting much.
