This Christmas i never had a Wii

Ok some of my long term fans of this blog (both of them, hi mum hi dad) may well be wondering "Liam why has it been so long since you gave us a bit of gossip or insight into the latest techie news, what's going on".

Like I previously stated I got a nice present recently, three months subscription to World of Warcraft. For anyone who has a life or just doesn't know, World of Warcraft is a computer game which you play over the internet. Its an entire world, full of villages and shops, but also a computer game so it's full of dragons and monsters. You get to play around with all this, when you log on you can become a little pretend person such as a knight or whatever your geeky heart desires. It's the perfect game for when the weather turns cold, and you want to stay in and waste away your hours talking to fellow geeks and trying to slay pretend monsters on your computer.

Anyhows over Christmas a surprise hit the UK which really found its way to the top of many kids Christmas present list. I am referring to Nintendo's Wii games console. Just a nice little box you plug into your TV and play games on. So what is the difference between this and all the other little nice boxes out now or coming soon you plug into your TV and play games on such as a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. Well apparently those nice chaps at Nintendo have designed the Wii to be a cheaper toy than the others (always a good idea in my opinion) however with a price tag of around £180 plus £40 for the games its not exactly cheap as chips just yet, but is substantially cheaper than the alternatives and will probably drop in price soon enough.

Instead of trying to compete with Sony and Microsoft with the ever increasingly more powerful and expensive Playstation and Xbox models Nintendo has tried to come up with a completely new way to play games.

Why else should we care and want to hand over our hard earned cash? Well the really interesting thing about the Wii, is that you don't just sit there pressing buttons to play a game. You have a special controller that reacts to your movements. Imagine playing a tennis game, if you want to move the raquet you swing the controller. If you are playing my personal favourite Zelda if you want to swing a sword, or shoot an arrow you make the movements with the little remote control. Why is this exciting? Well for geeks like me the idea that you really can swing swords at the bad guys rather than press buttons to watch the computer character swing a sword.

So how exciting can pretending your swinging a sword be? Well too exciting for some people, as there have been reports of people playing with their Wii's and swinging the remotes so hard that they have gone flying out of their hands and breaking things or hitting other people.
For a funny site devoted just to damage caused by the Wii remotes, click here. There have even been cases now of people using the Wii console for working out, here's the story of one such chap.

So in conclusion should we all rush out and buy Wii consoles? Well possibly, but as always with new technology its probably best waiting a few months, let the bugs in the system get sorted out. Let the new games and add ons come out so there is plenty waiting for you, and most importantly wait a little bit for the price to drop. And as soon as it does I assure you I'll be getting one myself.
