What to do with a crazy astronaut
Posted by liam on February 27, 2007 3:56 PM
NASA plan for unstable astronauts: following the case of the breakdown of Lisa Nowak, arrested this month on charges she tried to kidnap and kill a woman she regarded as her rival for another astronaut's affections.
The short answer is tie them up and inject them with tranqs (keep it simple)

Here's a good story, Huge adult Colossal Squid caught
It was caught by the New Zealand vessel San Aspiring fishing for Antarctic toothfish in the Ross Sea.The Colossal Squid was taken on board by crew and is thought to weigh about 450kg. It was brought to the surface on a long-line that had been set for toothfish and was holding on to a toothfish when first seen.
Would you find this relaxing

Clients at a beauty spa in Israel can enjoy a body massage using live snakes who slither across their bodies, apparently its relaxing though i doubt it would appeal to everyone. There is a video with this story but its not for the squimish
During the wild treatment at Ada Barak's Spa in northern Israel, clients lie down on a massage table while six non-venomous but very lively snakes take the role as masseuses. The snakes slither and hiss a path across the client's aching muscles and stiff joints, while a human masseur applies more traditional massage therapy.

ROME (Reuters) - It is sometimes said that Italy has two main religions -- Catholicism and football. Now the two will come together when the country, the current holder of the World Cup, hosts the first international championship for student priests.
Computer games can keep children slim

Interesting story published in the Liverpool Daily Post. Rather than contributing to childhood obesity as in the past (by causing children to be less active), the new generation of computers may help combat it.
Meeting the Asteroid Threat
Posted by liam on February 20, 2007 1:00 PM
One of the funniest intro's to a news story i've seen in a while.
Astronomers say they can now compute with great confidence which asteroids pose a threat to our planet. The problem is preventing a collision
So scientists can tell us whether we will be getting destroyed by an asteroid but can't really fix the problem yet. It's a good strory if you read on, apparently the best idea so far is a gravity tractor (which is a great name in my opinion)
best way to deflect an asteroid is with a "gravity tractor"--a spacecraft displacing about 1 metric ton that simply hovers near an asteroid and gently tweaks its orbit
Video games help traumatised soldiers de-stress
Posted by liam on February 20, 2007 12:01 PM
Sounds like a strange story but i saw this recently, apparently computers are being used to let soldiers relive war time trauma to help prevent post traumatic stress syndrome
A "virtual Iraq" simulation that allows soldiers to re-live and confront psychological trauma has produced promising results for the initial handful of patients treated using the system.

Man who fell to earth

Here is the story of a man who survived after hitting the ground when his parachute didn't open. And here is the amazing video he shot of this.
Viagra used to save baby's life
Posted by liam on February 16, 2007 12:01 PM
All the jokes in the world aside this is a great story.
Lewis Goodfellow was born at 24 weeks weighing just 1lb 8oz. One of his lungs had failed and not enough oxygen was able to get into his bloodstream.Doctors at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary then tried Sildenafil, also known under the trade name of Viagra, and Lewis is now home with his parents.
The drug opened up tiny blood vessels in the baby's lungs.
Interestingly Viagra, or Sildenafil, was originally intended to help patients suffering heart problems, by increasing bloodflow and therefore supplying oxygen throughout the body. It was a side effect that it can help men gain erections, it was never originally intended for this.
Siesta Time

Here is something worth showing your boss the next time they catch you sleeping on the job. A Greek study found that those who took a 30-minute snooze three times or more times a week had a 37% lower risk of heart-related death." Among working men, the risk was reduced by 64%.
News from Apple
Posted by liam on February 7, 2007 2:59 PM
Steve Jobs, the chief executive for Apple Computers made the headlines today. Mr Jobs is a sort of geek superman who helps shape a lot of the agenda for techie stuff, and was a big driving force behind the all conquering ipods and itunes revolution. Anyhows he's calling for record companies to drop the anti piracy restrictions they impose on music downloads. Considering his company has been the biggest driving force behind the expansion of music downloads, has probably got the record companies sitting up and taking notice.
Funny Apple News

Bit of lighthearted Apple stuff found on the web.
Here is a piece from the Guardian's Charlie Brooker titled simply I Hate Macs in response to the new Apple adverts featuring comedians Mitchell and Webb.
Another is a mock advert for the new iPhone over on YouTube
Surpise pregnancy at zoo

Here is the sort of story the internet was built for. Surprise birth has chimp sanctuary checking vasectomies
What a tale a chimp has become pregnant despite all the males around her having had vasectomies. Even better than the story is author Scott (author of Dilbert cartoons) Adam's low brow response to the story on his Dilbert blog here
