This week the Games Developers Conference was (and is being) held in California.
Sony has unveiled a few developments that have caught the media's eye. Over on the BBC's technology blog (not as good as mine of cause) Darren Waters talks about LittleBigPlanet
The concept is simple - build your own levels/worlds with a very simple tool set and with extremely cute characters and then play in that world and share it with others online.
Sounds like fun, though its not available till later in the year.
Another big development is Home. This is going to be a sort of computer life, for people (like me) who don't have real lives.
Home is a 3D universe where gamers will be able to meet, chat and share content. Home is similar to Second Life, the popular 3D universe for PCs and Macs. Gamers can create avatars - online versions of themselves - and buy new clothes and create their own homes.
Basically you will be able to play Home, as if its a whole new world were you will be able to do all sorts of amazing things such as talk to other ppl are choose your own clothes.... because we can't do that in the real world. Not a patch on World of Warcraft if you ask me, give me Dragons and swords any day.
All these developments have come out, not long after a big snippet of news was released by Sony. Though it isn't widely known, the new Sony Playstation 3, will not be backwards compatible... Of course you all know that means you won't be able to play your old Playstation 2 games. Apparently Sony want to concentrate more on their newer and more expensive PS3 games. Fair enough you might think? Well not really, because the Playstation 3's available in the US and Japan (already available i might point out) are completely backwards compatible. It will only be the ones released in Europe that won't be.
Given the hefty hefty price tag £450 at least for the consoles, Sony does not seem to be certain of keeping its crown as king of the consoles.
