Watch out Superman we've got Kryptonite now
Posted by liam on April 26, 2007 1:38 PM

Miners in Serbia have uncovered 'Kryptonite'.
A new mineral matching the unique chemistry of Kryptonite, supposedly a radioactive piece of Superman's destroyed home world Planet Krypton. According to movie and comic-book storylines, kryptonite is supposed to sap Superman's powers whenever he is exposed to its large green crystals. Does this mean the man of steel needs to watch out?
Well sadly no, although that would make a really great story, the truth is a little more mundane.

Can you count faster than a chimp?
Posted by liam on April 23, 2007 10:30 AM
Big fan of our cousins the primates, so unsurprisingly i found this article fascinating.
Apparently chimps can count faster than humans. No idea how they discovered this, or why it matters but there is a nice little game at the bottom of the article to test how fast you can count. For some reason i found this really addictive.
What's your top score? I got 1.227 for the final screen
Also in this article is a bunch of cool chimp videos from Youtube

Humans - Natural born runners

Here is a story to make you feel better when you are slogging away on the treadmill
Human's are one of the best adapted creature on the planet for long distance running and this may have gave our ancestors a huge evolutionary advantage in survival terms. Whilst we're not the strongest, most agile or the fastest, the fact we are designed to go the distance against our animal competitors changed us from being the hunted to being the hunters.
Modern humans and their immediate ancestors such as Homo erectus sport several adaptations that make humans, instead of some ferocious, furry, or fleet creature, the animal world’s best distance runners.“Humans are terrible athletes in terms of power and speed, but we’re phenomenal at slow and steady. We’re the tortoises of the animal kingdom,” Lieberman said.

Are mobile phones wiping out our bees?
Posted by liam on April 16, 2007 12:35 PM
Good story in the Independent today - Scientists claim radiation from handsets are to blame for mysterious 'colony collapse' of bees
The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving species from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back this up.
This could have a major impact on the food industry in the United States, where as much as $14 billion worth of agriculture business depends on bees for crop pollination.
Friday the 13th

For those of you who may be a little paranoid, just a friendly reminder that today is FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH - whoooooooooo
I'm sure most people will be aware of the spooky connotations associated with this date, but for anyone who wants to learn more just visit here or at the BBC's site here nterestingly there will be two Friday the 13th's this year one in April and one in July - doutble trouble?
For me of course the truly terrifying thing about this date is the series of dreadful Friday the 13th slasher movies - starring the unstoppable killing machine Jason Vorhees pictured here
Remember boys and girls, although he's a scary monster he's only looking for his mummy
Stripped off the shelves

Sky News has a really funny story over here "a Belgian lager with a risque marketing strategy has been stripped from sale"
Bottles of Rubbel Sexy Lager featured a picture of a woman with a removable swimsuit on the label. Drinkers could scratch her clothes off to leave her naked.
Here is my favourite quote from the story though:
Alcohol industry regulator the Portman Group has ruled the name of the drink and the scantily-clad model could lead drinkers to associate the product with sexual success.
For the record there has been no scientific proof of a relationship between alcohol and sexual success
How to scare bank robbers? Try smiling

Why didn't RoboCop ever try this? Friendliness to beat bank robbers
Excessive friendliness is the key to the “Safecatch” system created by FBI Special Agent Larry Carr. The premise is that an overdose of courtesy will unnerve would-be robbers and get them to rethink the crime.“If you’re a legitimate customer, you think, ’This is the friendliest person I’ve met in my life.’ If you’re a bad guy, it scares the lights out of you,” said Drew Ness, a vice president of Bellevue-based First Mutual Bank, who advocates the approach.
