Art 50 Weekender

Backbone of our Land

Presented by Folkworks, Sage Gateshead and Art 50

Sage Two

This event is part of Art 50 Weekender, a free festival showcasing some of the 50 artistic projects commissioned by Sky Arts, exploring what it means to be British today.

Backbone of our Land. What does it mean to be Northern? Why do we live here and why do we stay here? A host of leading Northern poets and folk musicians have been asking these questions.

“How did we get here, eh? We’re surprised to find ourselves on the brink of a seismic shift in our national identity but how did we get to this? When did we stop talking to each other? Let’s start talking now.

We might not always see eye to eye, but we all care about this land and where we’re heading. Backbone of our Land explores what it means to be part of the landscape, finding out who we are through conversation and connections.”

Led by Peter Brewis and Degna Stone, this premiere Folkworks commission of new music and spoken word features new work by Andrew McMillan and Kim Moore and performances by Peter Brewis, Bella Hardy, Sarah Hayes and Dan Rogers.

As this is a free event please ensure you arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time to avoid disappointment. Any seats not allocated 10 minutes before the start of the event will be offered to a standby queue.

Storyvault Films Limited is recording at this venue for a programme provisionally entitled “Art 50: This is Britain” for Sky Arts and it is possible you may appear in shot. By attending this event you consent to filming and sound recording which may include you and its use in commercial distribution without payment or copyright.
